Dear Santa: I have always wanted to live in a Charles Dilbeck home. Ever since I moved to Dallas and learned that Charles Dilbeck was one of the area’s most prolific architects, I have wanted to buy one of his homes. They were the first “older” homes I saw in Dallas. Well, that is, until I found Swiss Avenue. Dilbeck created romantic Tudors and French country homes sprinkled throughout the Park Cities and a few in North Dallas. His was Harry Potter style before Harry was a Potter. His homes have a signature English farmhouse feel to them, and are built rambling, as if they have been added onto. Dilbeck, for example, always said that in authentic cottages you could always find the original log cabin that the home started from. He also designed homes without hallways, so you have to go into one room to get to another, as if the house had been added on to randomly. It creates a very organic feel. And it was always such a refreshing contrast to the post World War II ranches that sprawled everywhere. Plus, I know his family.

Lakewood Traditional is Move In-Ready in Every Sense

6426 Westlake Front

What a fantastic home that really typifies “move in-ready” for me! For a home to be move in-ready, it has to:

  • Have immaculate neutral paint and fresh baseboards and trim,
  • Have gorgeous floors that are in tip-top shape,
  • And have a kitchen that is ready to plug-in and go!

This home, a 1937 traditional cottage, has all of these things, as well as some fantastic light fixtures and beautiful living areas. There are three bedrooms, two full baths, an updated kitchen, and more than 1,800 square feet, making this home at 6426 Westlake a perfect, cozy family property. This home, located inside Lakewood’s Country Club Estates, is listed with Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s Realtor Karla Trusler for $515,000.

Lakewood RE/MAX Agents Donate Bicycles to Wilkinson Center

As part of a holiday philanthropy project, two Lakewood RE/MAX agents organized a drive this month to collect children’s bicycles for The Wilkinson Center.

Barbara Reeves and Lee Dirickson, realtors at RE/MAX DFW Associates, collected 45 bicycles, helmets, and bike locks from other Lakewood RE/MAX agents and their business associates, and a Wilkinson representative picked them up last week.

“We are so grateful for the large donation of bikes and helmets from RE/MAX DFW Associates,” said Melanie Myers, President of The Wilkinson Center, which is a leading poverty rescue and prevention agency for the working poor, serving over 14,000 people annually, mainly in East and Southeast Dallas. “This donation will bring joy to the families served by Wilkinson Center and reflects the true spirit of the holidays.”

The Wilkinson Center will distribute the donated bicycles to qualified low-income families so their children can have a brighter Christmas.

“I’ve lived in this area and been in the real estate business for 40 years, and have known about the Wilkinson Center for years,” said Reeves. “I think everybody remembers their first bike and how you learned to ride it, that little stroke of independence and you turned around and mom or dad wasn’t holding on and you were just flying on your own.”

The Lakewood office of RE/MAX DFW Associates serves Lakewood, the M Streets, Lake Highlands, and other East Dallas neighborhoods.

Thursday Three Hundred: Lakewood Midcentury Reno Hits All the High Notes

6715 Patrick DriveThe theme of today’s Thursday Three Hundred is “gorgeous wood,” both because of the numerous large trees on this house’s lot and the inviting handscraped wood floors throughout the interior of this Lakewood midcentury.

Today’s Tuesday Two Hundred takes us just north of White Rock Lake in Lakewood to 7325 Rutgers Drive. This fantastic East Dallas neighborhood is full of other handsome midcentury houses like this one, but few are priced as competitively: With a recent price reduction, it is now listed for $299,900, or $185 per square foot. Nearby comps have been averaging almost $200 per square foot.

Built in 1960 and recently updated, this brick house is a 3-2 with 1,617 square feet sitting on 0.178 acres with lovely, mature trees. Located within walking distance of the new playground and splash park at Ridgewood-Belcher Rec Center, this University Terrace property is in the Lakewood Elementary, Long Middle, and Woodrow Wilson High School zones. Nearby private schools include Zion Lutheran, St. Thomas Aquinas Elementary, and Dallas Academy. The neighborhood has a Fourth of July parade and a Halloween party for local kids. Needless to say, the area draws many families.

Lakewood Theater Makeover Concerns Preservationists, Neighbors

The Lakewood Theater has stood as a colorful and beloved East Dallas landmark in Lakewood Shopping Center since its 1938 opening. So recent news reported by Nancy Nichols at D Magazine that the theater, located at 1825 Abrams Parkway, will be getting new tenants and a new look next year has preservationists and neighbors concerned. This is because the theater has historic designation (in other words, protection from demolition) on neither a national nor local level.

Adorable Brick and Stone Cottage Inside Stonewall Jackson Attendance Area

6159 Kenwood Front

We know that Lakewood Elementary is extremely sought after, with homes that would have sold for the mid $200ks a year and some change ago, selling for upwards of $325K in most cases. Of course, then there’s the M Streets area that feeds into Stonewall Jackson Elementary. It’s sought after for two reasons — not only is this area cozy and intimate feeling, but it’s extremely walkable and close to shopping and entertainment.

This home has a lot going for it besides the great curb appeal and fantastic location: It’s owned by Republic Property Group’s Tony Ruggeri! His company is behind those fantastic North Texas communities such as Light Farms, Phillips Creek Ranch, and Lantana!
