Thursday Three Hundred: East Lake Highlands Modern Offers Dazzling Aesthetic

8676 Langdale AHidden in East Lake Highlands near Northwest Highway and Plano Road is one of the largest collections of modern houses in Dallas, and some are still affordable, like the listing at 8676 Langdale Circle.

Designed by architect Jack R. Yardley and built in 1976, this looker is listed by Brandon Stewart with David Griffin & Company for $360,000.

Located on a corner lot in the secluded enclave of Mediterranean Gardens, this house is a 2-2 with 1,795 square feet, designed by Yardley for his then mother-in-law while he lived next door. (more…)

German native and President of Bauhaus Custom Homes, Marc Kleinmann, moved to the United States in 1996. His father was a real estate developer so the industry has been in his blood for quite a while.

Kleinmann took a hiatus from the housing/real estate industry, working in advertising for the first few years after immigrating to the US. He slowly returned by flipping a few houses at a time and eventually building spec houses. In 2007, during the economic downturn, he started Bauhaus Custom Homes.

“Downturns are good for any industry. It forces people to rethink and retool how they do things; they learn to do them more efficiently,” says Kleinmann. “Building a house is a team sport,” he continues. Bauhaus started out small but as the economy improved, it has taken on more projects and more staff to collaborate on home building projects from start to finish.

Untouched Midcentury Modern Owned By Fashion Designer Has High-End Details

10110 Daria Front

Midcentury modern connoisseurs will delight in this impeccably preserved Asian influenced specimen at 10110 Daria Drive in the gated Meaders James subdivision, which is just north of Walnut Hill and west of the Dallas North Tollway. It’s so close to Preston Hollow, and it’s in an area where you’ll find several distinctive properties like this one.

It’s one of those homes with such an exceptional floorplan and wonderful original details that is easily a high-caliber home, one worthy of being our High Caliber Home of the Week, sponsored by Lisa Peters of Caliber Home Loans.

I love the look and feel of this Lake Highlands home inside Lake Park Estates, a very popular area just a short jaunt from White Rock Lake. Owned by Todd Howard, founder of architecture firm th+a, 9623 Athlone is a 1950 ranch transformed into a modern retreat.

Open and airy inside, this home is sublimely modern with the perfect balance of angles and curves, cool and warm, glass and wood. It’s a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath beauty with 2,854 square feet, several living areas, gorgeous wood floors, tons of windows, and the most incredible kitchen (more on that later!). It’s marketed by Realtor extraordinaire David Bush for $650,000.

8643 Groveland Side Twilight

They have great views!

OK, that was a really bad joke, but it does illustrate why our Friday Four Hundred this week is an amazing property. This modern home at 8643 Groveland was just featured in the White Rock Home Tour, and is a gorgeous example of sustainable architecture and design. Not only does this two-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath modern masterpiece have tons of windows all around its exterior, but it takes advantage of the nature surrounding the home, allowing the homeowner to feel more connected to the outside space. It’s not a huge home at 1,550 square feet, but thanks to the windows, it feels that way. It’s listed by Ebby Halliday Realtor Jude Nash for $469,000.

43 Vanguard Front

I love Urban Reserve for many reasons, most of which coincide with my general adoration for modern architecture. Another reason to love Urban Reserve, a Matthews | Nichols development East of 75 and North of Royal Lane, is the focus on sustainability.

Of course, some people have bought lots in this fantastic subdivision to build groundbreaking dream homes with forward-thinking designs that you’d most often see in the pages of Architectural Digest, or any of the seemingly endless supply of Pinterest pages and Houzz idea books that celebrate modern architecture. But if you’re not the type of person who would wait four or five years between design and move-in, then perhaps 43 Vanguard Way is a better idea. You can quell your love for modern design and sustainability with this incredible LEED platinum home.

43 Vanguard Living

With 1,200 square feet and two bedrooms and two baths, this home is great for someone who wants to downsize but not sacrifice on design. In fact, that’s exactly the purpose behind the design by DSGN Associates, which was featured on the 2012 AIA Dallas Tour of Homes.

DSGN Associates was tasked with designing a budget-savvy but personalized “home base” for a pair of empty nesters. Vanguard Way is the result, a compact, two-bedroom home achieving high livability and high sustainability at an affordable cost. A collaborative effort between DSGN Associates, the client and the developer, this home takes advantage of a unique site to create an open, efficient plan with controlled views to a sunny garden. A generous roof deck provides a second outdoor living space and dynamic views to the adjacent DART line.

Generous windows on the south facade, balanced by small skylights, allow ample natural light during the winter months to all major rooms while a generous roof overhang shields the interior from harsh summer sun. Other sustainability features include advanced wood framing, Echoshel cedar shingle panels installed as a rain screen, photovoltaic solar array, geothermal heat pump HVAC, and energy recovery ventilation.

We love the interior features of this home, which includes polished concrete floors, sliding wall-hung doors, and beautiful windows from which you can admire your treehouse-type view.

43 Vanguard Dining

This gorgeous home is marketed by Briggs-Freeman Sotheby’s agent Christy Berry for $415,000. For an award-winning structure such as this, it sounds like a fabulous bargain. What do you think?

Remember That Box of a House on Mockingbird? You Can See Its Insides on June 4

Mockingbird June 4

This Highland Park house was a controversy before it was even built. Neighbors in Craftsman, traditional, and Mediterranean mansions surrounding this modern modular home on Mockingbird (say that five times fast!) were up in arms on the design.

If you’re curious to see what all the fuss is about, the Dallas Architecture Forum will host a Modern Living Cocktail Reception at the Russell Buchanan-designed home June 4. Cheekily dubbed “Inside The Box,” guests can expect a talk from the designer at 6:45 p.m., cocktails, hors d’ oeuvres and a visual tour. The business casual event lasts from 6 to 8 p.m. and will set you back $75 per person.

Here’s the write-up from the Dallas Architecture Forum website:

MOCKINGBIRD residence is one of the most experimental and controversial new residences in Dallas. The building is clad in an ultra energy-efficient metal insulated panel system that combines maximum protection with minimum long-term maintenance. Designed for a young family in the stone import and fabrication business, the 4,410 sq ft residence contains a main building in a simple rectilinear shape, designed in plan using five equal squares. Adjacent to the main building is an entry vestibule clad entirely in onyx slab. Completing the composition is a polished black stone wall for privacy and security. Tailored details, such as the quirk miter at corners, subtly refer to the craft of the owners’ livelihood.
