3344 Rankin Front

There are two reasons I love this listing:

1) This home is seriously adorable and not at all what you’d expect from a home in University Park, where restrained architecture and transitional style reigns supreme. Cozy and colorful, with original details in the most unexpected places, it is a treasure trove of architectural interest.

2) This home is packed to the gills with a lifetime’s worth of worldly collectables. Exotic pelts, antiques, African statues and masks, Moroccan textiles, and Spanish tile cover the floors, walls, and even ceilings of this beautiful home.

Welcome to 3505 Turtle Creek, The Vendome, #14 A. Welcome to the private sanctuary of Dallas interior designer Bev Heil, who bought a 4780 square foot shell and customized it 100% ten years ago. Absolutely everything in the home is customized and imported, from the hinges and hardware to the rock and wood panels. We love to get all voyeuristic on interior designers, and Bev personally managed her project, creating a luxurious sky rise with panoramic views of Turtle Creek and downtown. There is a private elevator entrance to this unit and there is terrace access from nearly every room! The kitchen is loaded with name-dropping appliances like Sub-Zero, Dacor and Fisher & Paykel in both the kitchen and wet bar. Limestone and parquet floors throughout, hand carved walnut paneling (even over the tub!), his and her master baths AND closets. Think you are on the 14th floor? Think again. You could be in a cave! The Vendome is home to many an over the top penthouse or two, including the “Winspear Penthouse’ with” more than 16,000 square feet of living space. The home was four years in the making, and encompasses more than 20 rooms: five baths, two half-baths, four bedroom suites, a media room, a club room, a golf room, a game room and a pool on the 18th floor. Philip Johnson House on Strait Lane Listed for $27.5 Million With David Nichols

Alan Peppard (heart heart) breaks the news on this one: the architecturally significant home of  Naomi Aberly and Larry Lebowitz at 10210 Strait Lane hits the market this week.  This is the home that the New York Times has called a “mega-version of the Lake Pavilion that Johnson designed on the grounds of his Glass House in New Canaan, Ct.” You may know it as the house with arches, east side of the street closer to Walnut Hill Lane, a huge white contemporary. Alan says it has hosted President Obama not once, but twice. The estate is listed for $27.5 million with David Nichols of the Mathews-Nichols group at Allie Beth Allman and Associates. I will be bringing photos your way as soon as they go live in MLS. Trust me, you will want to see the interiors — here’s what Alan says: “Between 2002 and 2008, Aberly and Lebowitz meticulously restored and modernized the house including a complete re-landscaping of the 6.45 acres by the Massachusetts firm of Reed Hilderbrand. The Dallas architectural firm of Bodron+Fruit did the renovation and designed the pavilion for the new swimming pool.” I’m getting chills already! (more…)

I love it when a home really surprises me. Sometimes when I’m slogging through my email, looking at all the cool listings agents and brokers send us, I find a real gem and just stop dead in my tracks. A friend of mine who is looking at homes in the $300K range sent me this listing last week. It’s in her price range, but not in the neighborhood she’s looking at.

“This has to be somebody’s dream home!” she exclaimed. I couldn’t help but agree just as enthusiastically. I mean, look at the curb appeal! That front door color is just delicious, isn’t it?

Former Texas Ranger Kenny Rogers Lists Westlake Mansion for $14.7 Million

1730 JT Ottinger extAllie Beth Allman’s Lille Young has this one nailed — she’s the listing agent to sell former MLB pitcher Kenny Roger’s vast and amazing Westlake estate at 1730 JT Ottinger Road, on 24 acres, designed by our Richard Drummond Davis. The listing is brand spanking new and on the market at a whopping $14.697 million big ones. The home itself is 12,316 square feet and features five bedrooms, six full and four half baths, nine fireplaces (wow!), pool, entertainment pavilion, equestrian center, ponds, guest house and of course a high tech security system.

Last week, my dear friend Tim Rogers over at D Magazine gave Museum Tower some good SEO by headlining that

“Museum Tower Shows Strong Uptick in Sales”.

He checked DCAD and found:

“…that 27 units have sold, for a total of 108,208 square feet and $57,343,250 of assessed value. Not too shabby. In about five months, Museum Tower has roughly doubled its numbers.”

But despite the nice headline, he didn’t think sales were fast enough. Or are fast enough. Of course, we in the real estate biz know how terribly behind DCAD lags. Until week before last, Kathy Nealy’s condo was still listed as being owned by Fannie Mae, and while I knew that Yu Darvish had bought his Bluffview home last November, it took DCAD 5 MONTHS to finally change the ownership from Joseph Palladino to Yu.  (more…)
