10181 daria drive putting greenNo matter what your opinion of George W. Bush, he was our president for two terms and he has defined the Darias, both Lane and Place, as his kingdom. His presence on the street makes for ever greater security and scrutiny, which neighbors really like. Besides, when he’s out of town, the gates are usually open.  This home is a brand new custom build a few doors down by that genius home builder Dennis Mullinex, a CandysDirt-approved builder, just completed in 2013. Which practically makes it brand new. The owners are from Wisconsin, and this was built as a second home for them to be near their children. It has a huge lawn (.91 acres), a stunning pool and a putting green. You will note the layout makes this a perfect home for grandparents: a lot of living is downstairs, including a to-die for master suite, bath, and closet. The upstairs is suited for grown visiting children with their own little ones. However, that is not to say this could not also be a fabulous family home. With more than 7200 square feet of perfection, I think a whole brood could live here quite nicely.

It also has a most unique safe room. The door is actually a huge, heavy door from a safe taken out of a bank in Wisconsin.

“The hardest part was not installing it,” Dennis told me, “It was hauling it here. That door safe is heavy!”

I was complaining to a friend recently about how far prices have gone up in North Oak Cliff, putting many homes — even the ones that aren’t perfectly updated — out of reach for many people. Of course, when I was at an event showing off a brand new modern custom home in Kessler Park — more on that later! — I lamented the lack of truly affordable real estate in the area.

It was none other than Steve Habgood that set me straight. According to Steve, principal at the Hewitt & Habgood team at Dave Perry-Miller and Associates, you just have to know where to look. Just south of where Tyler Street turns to Vernon, and close to the DART rail tracks and Cedar Creek is this fantastic little neighborhood in a private-feeling and heavily treed pocket of Oak Cliff. It’s called Elwood, and I’m sure you’ve heard us talk about it before!

6326 LakehurstAn unknown builder built 6326 Lakehurst several years ago, and I went to see it when it was brand new. At the time I was editing DallasDirt for D Magazine, and I know I wrote about this house. He kind of went over the top and then. just. stopped. building. Well, that was a familiar story back in those days.

Unfortunately, I cannot find the story I wrote, but when I walked into Lakehurst, it was like seeing an old college friend or boyfriend after so many years. The vibes just swelled and I felt comfortable, familiar again. Like I might just move into one of the humongo rooms and never leave.

Let’s face it: this is a big house, big mama, a house that is so perfect for a large family: three teenage boys or girls. Or a family with elderly parents who want to live in with them but still have their privacy. This would also be a great home for blended families. (more…)

I love the look and feel of this Lake Highlands home inside Lake Park Estates, a very popular area just a short jaunt from White Rock Lake. Owned by Todd Howard, founder of architecture firm th+a, 9623 Athlone is a 1950 ranch transformed into a modern retreat.

Open and airy inside, this home is sublimely modern with the perfect balance of angles and curves, cool and warm, glass and wood. It’s a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath beauty with 2,854 square feet, several living areas, gorgeous wood floors, tons of windows, and the most incredible kitchen (more on that later!). It’s marketed by Realtor extraordinaire David Bush for $650,000.

2935 Magnolis Hill CourtWhoa, this is one of those units that deserves the “O” word. Or maybe I should say, the “A” word. This is the Uptown loft of Arizona Diamondback right-handed pitcher Brandon McCarthy and his wife, Amanda.

Brandon McCarthyAnd the agent, darling Nancy Dunning at Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s, is not using broker babble when she says “one of a kind”. Nancy knows of what she speaks! McCarthy is said to earn in excess of $10,000,000 a year so money was not only no option, it wasn’t even a dream when they decked out this place. (more…)

Hollywood Heights Wednesday Wonder: Square Footage That’s Unheard of!

622 Newell Ave. Dallas, 75223

622 Newell Ave. Dallas, 75223

Last week my fabulous friend Karen Eubank, who I met through the Dirt Queen herself years ago and is a staging mastermind (read: if you are selling or have an event, you NEED her – she was my secret & saving grace in preparing for our home tour), invited me over to a house a block away from me to take a sneak peek before it hit the CRAZY market. I was blown away. And jealous. Seriously jealous. 622 Newell Ave. is in Hollywood Heights, is tastefully done, and has 2,883 square feet of space. In our historical ‘hood, it’s basically a mansion!
