Family Christmas Hearth

It’s Christmas Eve Eve, as my mother likes to call it, and we are doing everything we can to prepare our home to host a few friends and plenty of magic. When you live in 1,400 square feet, cozy is easy. But how do you achieve that kind of warm atmosphere on a larger scale? It’s in the accessories, says Bernadette Schaeffler.

Her boutique in the Dallas Design District is my favorite spot to get inspired for the holidays. Thanks to Schaeffler’s German heritage, she gives her Christmas decor a fun, cultural spin that exudes elegance.

You’ll recall that I stopped in to the Bernadette Schaeffler Collection on Tuesday of last week to see what this lovely Design District decor boutique had for Christmas. The holiday season is special for the store’s namesake, as it reminds her of the lovely traditions of her native Germany. How could I not stop in!?

“Christmas in my home country of Germany is very different from what we know here in North America,” said Schaeffler. “Even though I have to admit that I see more commercialism back home, our tradition is more the focus on the actual religious part of Christmas.”

That means beautiful and simple decorations that incorporate advent wreaths and straw figures, lovely handmade accents and simple elegance. They really make Christmas feel warm and cozy and delicious. Of course, the perfect gift for loved ones is a part of that, too.

SkyrestDrew Magary has published his 2014 Haters Guide to the Williams Sonoma Catalogue. You know, the ridiculous things we can fritter good money on in our perfect worlds where there is no Ferguson, MO, no discrimination, violence and no end of money. He mentions Connecticut, but we know exactly which ‘hoods in North Texas might have kitchens outfitted by Williams Sonoma–

Isn’t Christmas just grand when you spent thousands of dollars and hours upon hours of your free time making everything just so perfect, so you can spend the rest of your time micromanaging your family into oblivion, so that they are always within your maniacal control? I bet this catalog is for people who freak out if a dog nuzzles against them.

I love Williams Sonoma, and WS plaid towels are neatly hung from my Wolf stove. But I agree with most of his opines on these products. Textured milk may be so much BS, because the only textured milk I know is curdled milk left over after we’ve been out of town at the second home (which I imagine Magary would also have a field day hating) and I forgot to dump the leche before we left. Stay tuned, because we’ll be featuring more fabulous items from the Bernadette Schaeffler Collection as we count down to Christmas!

Trust us: Not all Christmas shopping is fun. A lot of it is an anxiety-fueled race to the finish line and that is the opposite of fun. So if you’re looking for an excuse to enjoy yourself while doing some legitimate Christmas shopping, look no further than the Bernadette Shaeffler Collection showroom in the Dallas Design District.

bar stoolsNewbie for all ye summertime readers: we will be sharing Jim Williamson of ID Collection’s fun blog musings as we pump him for latest design trends for our homes. This week he writes about cool bar stools — you can never have enough. Also, I like sturdy bar stools that don’t knock peeps over, ‘specially after a little imbibing.

Speaking of imbibing, Jim talks about THEE famous Williamson/Maxwell Fourth of July party, which I all but missed thanks to social fireworks at an earlier event. It’s not the kind of thing I feel comfortable talking about in print, but let’s just say Diane DuVall Rogers of Briggs Freeman Sotheby’s and and Lea Anne Laughlin of Harwood’s Bleu Ciel and I closed the Dallas Country Club apres fireworks. But I would not ever let a Fourth fly without seeing my buddies on Commerce, so  I pointed the CandysDirt-mobile to Fair Park. Besides, I was wearing red, white and blue Pucci, fireworks debris and some of my dinner. I popped in, had a drink, chatted with the only guests left, the neighbors, and totally missed the girl passed out in the second floor bathroom. Yep, it was a great party — read on: (more…)
